CORE recall and Structural reference navigation need different practice. Build a study plan that gives each skill time.

1. Separate the two study tasks

If you are preparing for Ontario's Structural exterminator certification pathway, keep the CORE and category-specific material distinct in your study plan. OPT&C's 2025 Exterminators Information Guide describes two multiple-choice parts, each with 50 questions: a one-hour closed-book CORE examination and a 90-minute open-book category-specific examination. Check your own current provider instructions before booking or choosing permitted materials.

Those formats suggest different revision tasks. For CORE, rehearse explaining concepts without looking at the page. For Structural, practise finding and interpreting the relevant reference as well as understanding the subject. Neither task is solved by memorizing a few online answer letters.

2. Give CORE an active-recall routine

Choose one section from your official CORE Manual. Read it with a specific question in mind, then close the manual and write a short explanation from memory. Reopen the reference and correct what was missing or inaccurate. Keep the corrected explanation in your own words.

For a fictional reading exercise, a condition says that both requirement A and requirement B must be met. Explain why satisfying A alone does not settle the decision. The purpose is to practise interpreting the whole condition, not to learn a product-use instruction.

Record the type of error: missing a condition, confusing two concepts, overlooking a unit or simply guessing. Your next study task should address that error rather than repeat the same familiar question immediately.

3. Practise Structural reference navigation deliberately

Build a topic map using your own Structural reference. Choose a study topic, find the relevant section, then explain how its information applies to an original scenario. Finding a page and understanding it are separate achievements.

For example, a fictional report describes recurring activity beside a food-storage area and a damaged seal. List the observations that would support or weaken the suspected explanation. Then identify where your reference discusses inspection, prevention and follow-up. Do not infer a confirmed pest identification from a vague report.

Before examination day, confirm what reference materials, annotations, tabs or other aids your provider permits. A suggested revision tool is not permission to take it into an examination.

4. Use a two-track weekly study sheet

Draw two columns labelled CORE and Structural. Under each, write one concept to explain, one practice task and one uncertainty to resolve. Keep the columns short enough that you can complete and check the work.

A suggested session has three parts: review one concept, answer or explain an unfamiliar example, then check the reference and record the reason for any correction. Alternate between the two tracks according to your gaps. There is no universal number of sessions that guarantees readiness.

After a mock, separate incorrect answers from correct guesses. Both belong in your revision plan. Try a different scenario after checking the concept so that improvement does not depend on remembering a particular wording.

5. Choose the matching practice resource

Use the free CORE mock for a full set of foundational practice questions and the Structural mock for category-focused scenarios. Both show the score, answers and explanations without requiring an email address. Their questions are original independent practice, not the official examination bank or a prediction of your result.

The free downloadable AptNexa Study Starter Guide is specifically Structural. It includes a small original question set and subject review; it is not a complete CORE manual or a full official mock. Choose resources by the skill you need to practise, not only by whether a title contains the word pesticide.

AptNexa's preparation courses are separate from the official certification and licensing process. Current course descriptions explain the available study materials; an AptNexa account or practice score does not register you for an official examination or grant a licence.
